Frequently asked questions

  • What is the cost of lessons?
An in-person 60min lesson costs $60nzd. It can be 30min too, so $30nzd total.  I offer a FREE foundational video on this site. All can access the 20min video for no cost.
  • Do I need to have a proper piano at home to take lessons?
For beginners I suggest a keyboard to start off with, this is for you to reinforce what you have learned in lessons. Something affordable, easy and lightweight is a great start, no need to fork out thousands on an upright piano as of now.
  • How often should I practice the piano?
Consistent practise is key. I’d recommend 15-30min a day, you can do that during weekdays and for the weekend take it off. As long as the material covered sits comfortably with you and you understand everything, that is sufficient.
  • How long does it take to learn to play the piano?
Learning to play the keys varies for each individual. I am confident you will understand the basics and understand simple note reading within weeks, IF time and consistent revision is applied. To master, it is an evolving, lifetime process.
  • Am I too old to learn the piano?
Age is just a number! I usually take on students minimum 5 years of age, and onwards. This includes adult students in 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s etc. As long as you are keen and willing, that is what's needed. We start with beginner friendly material in general, taught at a pace you are comfortable with.
  • What styles of music can I learn on the piano?
You can learn a range of musical styles, we start off with foundational classical concepts first. Things like notes, note types, sheet music reading, chords, scales. Then you can have a solid grounding to explore other genres- pop, jazz, so on.
